| You're essentially correct, matty. But it wasn't Mike who shut down Smile, it was Brian.
Brian was faced with so much opposition that he had to decide between breaking up the band and going solo or placating his mates.
He decided to preserve The Beach Boys and, therefore, Smile had to be scrapped.
Mistake at the time? Maybe. So many decisions; so little time.
Thankfully, Brian finally completed the project anyway.
Oh, and to you, Mike Love? Listen to this and suck it. |

| Regardless, this song was for Smile. When Smile was shelved some of the tracks were put onto future Beach Boys albums. This one ended up on Surf's Up. |

| Oh. I thought that Brian basically "shut down" Smile because he had some idea that it would bring harm if it was released. He was still a drug addict at the time. I'm not saying you're wrong, that's just what I've always heard. |

| No, it was for 'Smile', and after Mike basically shut down 'Smile', this song ended up on 'Surf's Up'. |

| I think this was originally on the album 'Surf's Up', not Smile. You can find the album bundled with Sunflower now days. |

| Thanks, NyeTunes. I thought I'd heard what was perhaps the most true-to-the-original-Brian Smile album. I've got the Purple Chick version downloading now. I appreciate the tip! My apologies to anyone reading for my flawed comment - even though I'm still thinking that the Odeon Records version is worth hearing. I haven't heard any bootleg "remixes" that are as recent as that. God bless contemporary Smile fans! Again, thanks NyeTunes. I'll be enjoying the next hour listening to it :) |

| The Odeon records version is NOT meant to be cohesive... it's just supposed to be a kind of "starter's version" of Smile, presenting most of the basics in one place.
The REAL cohesive version was the free-for-download Smile from the bootleg company Purple Chick, which used Beach Boys recordings to replicate Brian's 2004 version as closely as possible. It's flawed, but it's pretty cool to hear nonetheless. :-) |

| Try to find something called the Odeon Records version of Smile - it's mastered as if Brian had actually put his original recordings into a cohesive album. Pieces may be missing here and there, but it's vintage Brian Wilson: heart and soul and amazing recording takes. Thank God someone took the time to compile that. |
