| That is orthodox grip. It was originally used for a marching side drum but it crossed over to the kit. Modern drummers tend to use matched grip, which was originally used for percussion. Orthodox is good if you're doing a lot of snare work, or if you simply prefer it, and many do. In orthodox, the stick (in your left hand) is held two thirds of the way down between the thumb and first finger above the stick, along with the second finger. The third and forth fingers are underneath the stick. |

| Whoever is bashing joe morello for some new ass metal drummer is a straight up idiot. He's playing slower because, if you notice, this is his solo with a BAND. There is a piece they are playing, and it's got a time signature. He's not going to make his own tempo up and cut loose, that's a sign of immaturity, especially with jazz. Joe Morello is beastly, and his transitions back into songs themselves are great. If you want, look at "Take 5" on youtube as well. He's got an excellent solo in there. |
