| thx for the info again!
to tell u the truth, i have never succeeded in bringing up mantid babies....
i had to set up stable supply of fruitflies first.
lately i keep a female pygmy mantis (btw, i wonder if the name is politically correct...) as a new pet. |

| In the USA, at least, you can purchase Chinese Mantis oothecae from some Pest-Control websites. The availability may vary from state to state, but I have been able to purchase and hatch some out in the past. 200-300 nymphs per ootheca. Be careful... they will eat each other, and must be fed very small prey, like fruit flies, until they are big enough to take crickets and other food. |

| We have several native species of mantis, most of them medium to small size. The Carolina Mantis and Bordered Mantis are both natives. We also have smaller mantids which I have not studied personally.
Then there are the major imported species, Mantis Religiosa, and Tenodera Aridifolia Sinensis. They are large and powerful, but the native species seem to hang on just fine even when those are in the area. In fact, the only displacement I have seen is Carolinas being supplanted by Bordereds. |

| feel free to point out my english mistakes in other footages as well.
for example, i am still looking for the authentic english common name for Statilia maculata (shown here as "pygmy praying mantis", i personally translated from the japanese name "ko-kamakiri").
my dictionaries are not useful at all to know entomological words and species' common names.... |

| yeah, i have seen that vid clip of the epic battle (chinese mantis vs. giant hornet) originally made by natgeo.
nice to meet a mantis-lover!
i heard that chinese mantes were introduced in north america as biocontrol.
no other kinds of mantids over there? |

| You are very welcome! It is the largest mantis in the world, and capable of eating a large variety of prey. Anything from fruit flies (when the mantis is young) to small mice, lizards and even small snakes will be caught, restrained, and eaten alive by the large females.
One insect this mantis has a very tough time with is the Japanese Giant Hornet. Those large, powerful hornets will usually win a fight with even the largest female mantis. |

| hello.
i appreciate ur feedback very much.
i will edit the vid description.
this species is the biggest mantis in jpn.
and "giant mantis" was my literal translation from the japanese common name, "oo-kamakiri". |

| Tenodera Aridifolia is commonly known as the 'Chinese Mantis', and less often as the 'Giant Japanese Mantis'.
I kept one as a pet years ago, and she was an absolute machine. This mantis would eat anything she could overpower... and was strong and aggressive enough to scare cats away with relative ease. I actually found her because I heard a cat make the familiar and comedic cat scream. I ran out back to find the neighbors' cat hissing at the mantis.
She liked to eat small adult mice. |
