| Just to add you your comments.
There are other bladder management options used as well. External or "condom" catheters are very popular as well as intermittent catheterization or i/c's like a regular cath but doesn't stay in once you've emptied, done several times a day. Surgery is rare nowadays to control the bladder of someone with an SCI.
And, as with the others...this nurse is a good example of how not to change a catheter. Very sloppy. |

| 2)which would mean that their diapers are always wet, which can be very uncomfortable plus much more difficult to take care of versus a catheter which is changed once every ten-30 days. But catheters can lead to frequent urinary tract infections which is what christopher reeve died of, I believe, and so many urologists recommend SCI patients take a third option which usually requires some form of a surgery to prevent urine retention but also allows a patient to not rely on a catheter or a diaper |

| 1) the problem with spinal cord injury patients is that many of them lost function of bladder muscles which create urine retention. when you don't void urine at the full volume (around 500mL) it either leaks out though the urethra, or it can go backwards up to the kidneys. this can be very dangerous in the long run and can lead to kidney failure. now the opposite of that is that many SCI patients constantly leak (caused by when the bladder's sphincter is very loose and is basically stuck open) |

| Hi why do you guys not wear diapers or something instead of a catheter? because it seems like it takes a lot of time to put in.. Just wondering im not trying to be rude or anything. |

| Just by chance, I was the 6,800th person (according to my counter) to say, "Nicely Done." I have a 18 French with 6 CC's saline foley and change twice a month. Rarely, have I contracted an infection, and then only minor.
As we know, the pain is temporary and the embarrassment moot. It's just the fact that it's become a full time attachment and an indigent way to piss. My drain bag is looped behind my waist and in a backpack. Oh Well!! Take care, Mike. |
