That would be called the air intake. This is usually only on older model cars.

what your talking about is the air filter and housing, this only applies to cars that are carbureted so it would be mostly classics American muscle.

I really need to know something about engines. If you know this, please tell me. On the top of some engines I've seen, there's a fairly big, circular thing that has metal on the top and, what looks to be, filter material in the middle. Like I said, I've only seen it on some engines on the top. If any of you know and if you could tell me, it'd be greatly appreciated.
