I met Art Arfons at a monster truck + tractor pull show. They had a meet/ greet/ autograph thingy before the show. Everyone was all gaga over the monster trucks and there was Art Arfons standing around his pit area, pretty much ignored! A living legend! Oh, well, more time for me :) Great guy, awesome machinery!

He used GE T64 Turbines. As for the "flames" you see when he is going down the track there is actually quite a amusing story behind it. In the old days of tractor pulling, the turbine tractors had to have stacks (exhaust pipes). That were tapered, because people thought turbines made more down force than piston motors. Well Art proved them wrong on paper, and once they removed the rule about the stacks being tapered, he made the tractor you see.

If I remember correctly it is not the space invader... The 64s (the motors) on the space invader are facing the opposite direction (stacks at the front instead of the back). It is now called the legend.

I remember seeing this tractor when I was little. There was a monster truck show/tractor pull. He came out after the rest of them (i dont think there was a class for this type yet, so it was just for show). And he pulled the sled all the way off the track and shut it down himself. I remember the lights in the wheels that would speed up as the jets wound up. I wish they would bring back the monster truck shows with the tractor pulls and the mud boggers! That was the greatest show on earth!
