Nah, no the whole field. just most of it
megan4197 (June 20, 2008 at 10:06 am)
I never stated that they "represented the field of cognitive psychology" - just suggesting that they present a clear alternative to early expectancy value theories. I hope you are not suggesting that attribution theory has not had a major impact on the area of motivation? It sounds as if you are dismissing the whole field of social psychology as pseudoscience.

I don't think Brent was talking about the matching law. You mean Hernstein's matching law? That's probably the most atheoretical "theory" in all of operant conditioning! It makes absolutely no empirically unjustified inferences about the contents of associations - and was derived directly from Skinner's introduction of concurrent schedules.
megan4197 (June 20, 2008 at 9:52 am)
I don't think that's the case; Guthrie's stimulus sampling theory was formed as an explanation of instrumental behavior. It did not have a broad empirical basis and his contention that a US merely "changed the situation" was vague at best. His theory conforms very much to a cognitive interpretation. The major impetus for Rescorla and Wagner's model was Kamin's discovery of the blocking effect in Pavlovian conditioning - and was later refined by Mackintosh and Pierce.
Zeldovich (June 19, 2008 at 11:05 pm)
Brent, the matching law was right in front of him. It was right there in the suppression ratios he recorded, but perhaps his supposed atheoretical bias helped him miss it.

Actually, that little formula to describe "transitive thought" you posted (a=b, b=c, then a=c) is called derived stimulus relations witin the ABA realm. Look up the research, some pretty interesting findings in regards to that aspect of human Bx. And besides, for Skinner to lack "creativity" and have a "black box approach" within the field of Psychology and take it in a direction that Psychology had not gone to yet, he certainly did well for himself. Just an oppinion...
Zeldovich (June 15, 2008 at 6:26 am)
Josh, I don't think Skinner even understood behaviorism very well.
Zeldovich (June 15, 2008 at 6:22 am)
megan, some expectancies are conscious and some unconscious. Those that are "conscious" merely involve metacogitive processes, facilitated by transitive thought and symbolic self-representation, and abstract symbolic representation, in general. There's nothing fuzzy about metacognition. It follows every law of learning.
