This fascinating, brilliant 20-minute video narrates the history of the "Amen Break," a six-second drum sample from the b-side of a chart-topping single from 1969. This sample was used extensively in early hiphop and sample-based music, and became the basis for drum-and-bass and jungle music -- a six-second clip that spawned several entire subcultures. Nate Harrison's 2004 video is a meditation on the ownership of culture, the nature of art and creativity, and the history of a remarkable music clip.

| and i also think that the reason why new artists were to take the sample and bypass for their own uses and the sample theirs is because most of the public, law systems, music fans don't know about The Winstons and the real source which the music came from. Basically nobody ever heard of the Winstons intill the sample that was used in commercial music over the airwaves that someone interpreted where it came from. |

| Basically everything out now in modern music sounds cool to us because its backed up by the cultural aspects of the genre of music. But most of that music has been sampled by something older in time from a different genre. This makes me think like how diffrent species of life started from one creature. Could music have had the same principle? Where all diffrent genres came from one type of music and was just backed up by cultural aspects of human feelings of music to make it sound cool? |
