夜いつものように飼育 ースから出して卓上で遊ばせていたら、目を離した隙に電気スタンドの裏側で逆立ちして卵を産み始めた。上半身は静止したまま尾部だけを繊細に動かして器用に泡立て、中の空洞に黄色い卵を産みつける。腹の先にある2本の突起（尾角）で触角のように探りながら卵鞘を作っていく。固まった卵鞘の傍から離れるまでの一部始終が4時間12分。デジカメによる総撮影時間48分の動画を編集し、10倍速再生にてお届けします。
10x high-speed replay of a Chinese mantis (Tenodera aridifolia) laying eggs behind my desktop lamp. The labor lasted for 4 1/4 hrs in real time. Mid-October, 2006 in Japan.
PS: In northern parts of Japan, there has been an old saying that the higher mantids lay eggs at, the heavier it snows in coming winter. I mean, mantids are said to have a sixth sense to forecast the amount of snowfall to keep their precious eggs from being buried. Do you have that sort of folklore in your country?

| hi, nice to meet another mantis-lover.
i am not such an experienced breeder as u might think.
but i think she will eat eventually, if hungry enough.
she also needs drinking water and some stable sticks to perch on.
and after well-fed, she will lay eggs soon.
plz be patient.
where do u live?
is it cold?
i remembers that in her dying days, my mantis' eyes were black even in daytime.
but i may be wrong.

| Great video! I have a same mantis who is pregnant. She refused to eat for the first time yesterday, & her eyes are half dark during the day today when they should be light colored. We never had a mantis before and I wonder how soon she would begin laying eggs from this stage, also whether she would completely refuse to eat, and will she die after finishing laying eggs? I'd appreciate if you could give me any tips. |
