This is an excerpt of the 30 minute speech supporting the Republican presidential nominee Barry Goldwater. Reagan speaks of big government, high taxation, and the "war on poverty." He addresses foreign policy issues including the risk of appeasement, "peace through strength," and the Vietnam War. The speech establishes Reagan as an important figure in the conservative wing of the Republican party.
To a significant degree, Ronald Reagan's election to the presidency stems from this speech, given on national television on behalf of, and sponsored by, Barry Goldwater's 1964 presidential campaign. The speech remains amazingly fresh as a statement of modern American conservative philosophy four decades after it was delivered.

| Oh, and note that your figures don't take into account the decline in wages among minorities, nor the large numbers of plant closings, job losses and a widening gop between rich and poor.
It is conservatives' blatant disregard for the livelihood of ordinary citizens that has been the hallmark of their domestic policies |

| Reagan's policies were all about giving the people control over their lives and yet through deregulation, Reagan allowed private corporations to undermine the economic security of millions of citizens. You like numbers? Deregulating Savings and Loans associations led to unsound investments and corporate mergers. The Federal Savings and Loan Insurance Corporation faced bankruptcy. The government had to fork out over 250 billion tax payer dollars to stop the lending banks from collapsing. |

| -In 1981, the beginning of Reagan's presidency, the top 5% of
wage earners paid 35% of federal income taxes, while the bottom
50% paid 8%. By 1988, the end of Reagan's presidency, the top 5% paid 46% of the federal taxes, while the bottom 50% paid 6%(Joint Economic Committee, 1990)-Inflation went down during Reagan's time in office. In 1980 the CPI (Consumer Price Index) was 13.5, and in 1984 it dropped to 4.3, and eventually to 4.1 by 1988. (Economic Report of the President, January, 1993) |

| Funny talking about a voluntary surrender based on spiritual, moral, and economic weakness - it's like he's predicting how "great" the national debt would be when he left office in 1989.
"Compassionate" conservatism my ass.
Barry Goldwater must be turning in his grave. |

| What I love about libs like bap is that they're so busy trying to tell everyone else what they believe but never expose the crap he believes. The reason they don't is that they are so far out of touch with mainstream America that they'd be soundly rejected. Instead, they have to hide behind their attacks, distorting the views held by their rivals. How sad. At least I'm proud to say what I believe in and don't have to hide my belief system. |

| Bapyou, I love how you are trying to put words in my mouth that don't belong. You are lying through your teeth and it's pathetic. Typical liberal tactics because you don't have truth to back it up. You are one sick puppy. |
