I could have written that last sentence myself. Yes and there is good stuff still, just in terms of atmosphere. The 80's had a much better one. Today's stuff seems dictated by Shit-rag mags like Grazia, Hello, OK e.t.c

If you want to be really didactic on the subject (and what the hell, I think I will!), music videos were quite popular as short subjects as far back as the 1930's. Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington and others were featured in some surprisingly conceptual short music films throughout Hollywood's golden era. Of course they're not cut ofthe same cloth as the modern music video, but there's certainly a shared lineage there.

All that music is still out there, though for anyone who cares to look beyond the charts...we're all still spoilt for choice if we care to be! I must agree, though that we're going through a pretty bleak period in popular music right now. I've always been a little out of step anyway and most of my favorites were either popular before I was born (or at least before I would have been particularly aware of music), or so obscure as to never have been very popular at all.

I've read that, too. But do you know the very first full-album-length promo video (NOT made as a commercial film either for theatrical or tv release, but strictly as a promo tool)? It was The Strawbs' "Grave New World" 1971. I have it on DVD and it's pretty terrible, actually (the video part, I mean--the music is fantastic!).
